My work deals with the traditional roles and activities of women, families, marriage and home. Primarily concerned with the gendered messages and myths about traditional women’s roles and the conflicts they pose, I use family photographs embedded in the iconography of early Christian and Renaissance altarpieces, icons and illuminated manuscripts and their sacred and secular hierarchical messages. While no longer in the throes of daily mothering, my life has continued to be rooted in family issues and household concerns and these experiences shape my art making.
